TMJ

DSM Core Chiropractic + Pain Therapy specializes in treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, which can cause pain in the jaw joint located in front of the ear. Chronic TMJ pain is the more common presentation and can result from activities such as grinding, clenching, or prolonged gum chewing, leading to asymmetric muscle tension in the jaw and face, deviation of the jaw when opening and closing the mouth, and popping or grinding sounds during chewing. Sudden onset TMJ pain can occur after forceful chewing, a large yawn or bite, or trauma to the face/jaw, often accompanied by a "pop" when attempting to open or close the mouth. Proper evaluation and treatment of TMJ pain must also consider the involvement of the neck, as many of the muscles involved in jaw function share attachments in the cervical spine. At DSM Core, we provide specialized care to effectively evaluate and treat TMJ dysfunction, including a focus on the related neck muscles, to achieve long-lasting results.

The most common symptoms of TMJ

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint, face, neck, or shoulders
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw when opening or closing the mouth
  • Difficulty opening the mouth wide or fully
  • Locking of the jaw joint, making it difficult to open or close the mouth
  • A change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together, such as a change in the bite or an uncomfortable bite
  • Headaches or earaches, often accompanied by dizziness or vertigo
  • Muscle spasms in the jaw or neck
  • A feeling of tiredness or stiffness in the jaw muscles, especially after chewing or talking for long periods.

Treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction

Our chiropractic clinic utilizes a hands-on, deep tissue myofascial release approach to treat the soft tissues of the face and jaw. TMJ pain can be effectively treated by correcting tight muscles and fascia that balance and guide the jaw. Retraining the TMJ with at-home exercises are vital for long-term resolution. Chiropractic adjustments also play an important role in correcting joint dysfunction in the TMJ and cervical spine. TMJ pain patients at DSM Core will receive one-on-one care with the doctor through the duration of their visit emphasizing individualized and focused treatment.
